Ways to Boost Your Immune System

With the current scare of the coronavirus all around the world, it seems like a good time to talk about strengthening the immune system.

The immune system is the first line of defense against alien micro organisms entering our body. The stronger your immune system the less likely you are of becoming ill.

There are many things you can do to help your immune system operate at its highest capability. By being proactive with your health and taking care of your body you are helping your immune system function at its optimum ability. If you make a strong effort to improve your health, you can strengthen your immune system and help yourself to avoid getting stricken with virus bugs like a cold or flu.

“The best time to improve your health is when you are healthy, NOT once you’re sick”

What is the immune system

The immune system is a network of organs, cells, proteins and tissues that defends the body against foreign invaders and disease. The immune system can be generally divided into two states, innate and adaptive. Innate immunity is the natural immunity in which you are born with. Adaptive immunity is the immune system’s ability to produce specific ways to fight invaders of the body, called antibodies. The innate and adaptive work together in order to fight a virus. The adaptive part of the immune system can take 5 to 10 days to develop the antibody required to kill the pathogen. In this time frame the innate part is keeping the pathogen from multiplying and taking over the body.

Your immune system is just that, a system. In order for this system to be able to fight off infections and disease it needs balance and harmony. Therefore, it is very important to be actively taking care of your overall health and in turn your immune system. Because the immune system is not just one entity but an array of cells and tissues all working together, the only way to help/optimize it is by improving the health of your entire body. The immune response of a healthy person is vastly different from that of a sick or unhealthy person. The best time to improve your health is when you are healthy, NOT once you’re sick. Although you can do things to boost your immune system when you are sick, the effects those things will have are immensely less than they would have been on a healthy system.

Things you can do to improve your health and immune system.

Exercise:

Regular exercise is one of the pillars of healthy living. It improves cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, helps control body weight, and protects against a variety of diseases.

Eating a healthy diet:

A well-balanced diet rich in vitamin complex, proteins, fruits and vegetables.

*Using supplements is a great way to introduce the essential vitamins and minerals into your body that you are otherwise not getting through your foods. By taking a good supplement you can be sure that you are getting the nutrients that you need. This doesn’t mean you can eat junk food if you are taking you vitamins and supplements! It just means every meal you eat doesn’t have to contain all the vitamins and minerals you require because your supplements are there to pick up the slack. Supplements are meant to go along side of a healthy diet. *

Sleep:

During sleep, your immune system releases proteins called cytokines, some of which help promote sleep. ... In addition, infection-fighting antibodies and cells are reduced during periods when you don't get enough sleep. So, your body needs sleep to fight infectious diseases.

Manage your weight:

Losing Weight Helps Immune System. ... Excess fat around the abs can turn the body's defense system against you, leading to heart and other diseases.

Don’t drink too much alcohol:

Alcohol affects the way health gut microbes interact with the immune system. Alcohol also disrupts the gut barrier, allowing more bacteria to pass into the blood. So if you drink, drink in moderation.

Reduce stress:

Easier said than done! but at least try to reduce the amount of stress in your life. The stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system.
